Nine-year-old Johncris Carl Quirante of Barangay Looc, Dumanjug,Un has hyperdontia, a rare condition of having supernumerary teeth. Hyperdontia is the condition of having supernumerary teeth or teeth that appear in addition to the regular number of teeth. They can appear in any area of the dental arch and can affect any dental organ.
Quirante has around 300 teeth, 40 of which were extracted Thursday under a pyogenic granuloma treatment.
Seven more operations are needed to remove Quirante’s extra teeth. Usually, extractions are done for decayed teeth. But for his case, with so many excesses of dentition, relief is needed for better occlusion for the patient. Sometimes, a hard-to-pull tooth must be removed in pieces.
Despite his condition, Quirante manages to go to school and is now in his fourth grade. He also manages to excel in class, according to his teachers. People living with supernumerary teeth can also lead a ‘normal’ life. Quirante said he aspires to be a civil engineer someday. This is great as the boy has a great way to better understand the world and how to adapt to it. This is an interesting case of dental anomalies happening in a young boy, despite what has happened, it didn’t affect his psychological being, and can be a case report for individuals having similar conditions.
