A brief introduction to healing abutments

The healing abutment (also called healing cap or cuff), is a temporary abutment meant to be placed over the implant site during the first healing stage. Due to its intimate proximity to the wound during this phase, the healing abutment plays a vital role in the healing process, particularly of the soft tissue around the implant. As it is responsible for initiating a first phase of soft tissue contouring, proper choice of healing abutment dimensions and material will lead to optimal soft tissue healing and positive long-term results for the implant system.

Our healing abutment materials: titanium and PEEK

Titanium first gained popularity as a reliable workhorse material for the aerospace industry in the 1950’s because of its light weight, high strength-to-weight ratio, and high resistance to corrosion. Today it is also one of the most commonly used materials in the dental industry due to the aforementioned reasons, and comprises the majority of dibay’s healing abutment line. Titanium has additional qualities that make it ideal for long-term placement in the oral environment, such as excellent mechanical properties and high biocompatibility.

In modern dentistry, the esthetic management of an implant is as much a critical element to consider as is the implant itself. Enter PEEK (polyetheretherkeytone), an organic synthetic polymeric material. Due to the tooth-colored material of PEEK, it is widely used today in any implant situation where esthetics are of concern. PEEK surfaces, in comparison to titanium, have been found to accumulate less biofilm, as well as have less risk of soft tissue recession and marginal bone loss during the initial healing period of the implant.

Scientists are still working to modify the PEEK surface in order to enhance proliferation, cell adhesion and biocompatibility to a level competitive with that of titanium. When seated properly, it has also been found that titanium abutments are more capable of providing an impervious crestal seal than PEEK abutments
That said, researchers are hopeful that the surface modifications to PEEK plastic will allow it to replace titanium in the future.
